چکیده

Central nervous system (CNS) tumor markers that have been m easured in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) include among others, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), glutamic oxalacetic transaminase (GOT), aldolase, phosphohexose isomerase (PHI), lysozyme, creatinine kinase, isocitrate dehydrogenase, adenylate kinase, the polyamines and desmosterol. Such markers have at least five possible functions in the diagnosis and management of CNS neoplasms: screening, diagnosis, classification, early prediction of changes in clinical status and evaluation of efficacy of therapy. The predictive value model of Galen and Gam bino14 defines four parameters (sensitivity, specific ity, predictive value and efficiency) which can be used to determ ine the potential utility of each marker for each possible function. Since the low prevalence of CNS tumors (4.5 cases per 100,000 individu als) makes screening in the general population impractical, this model has been applied to the use of the aforementioned markers for diagnosis of CNS tumors in patients with neurological symptoms. The data from previous clinical studies have been collated and used to calculate the sensitivity and specificity of each marker. Very little data are available relative to the potential utility of these markers for the last three functions m entioned, except for desmosterol and polyamines. Finally, the possibility of a diagnos tic test for CNS tumors based on m easurem ent of more than one marker is proposed as a means of improving the low specificity of many of the markers studied.

Cerebrospinal fluid biochemical markers in central nervous system tumors: a review.

Despite numerous studies over the past three decades, the role of these markers in the diagnosis of central nervous system (CNS) tumors is not yet established. In this report, the literature is reviewed and an attempt is made to define the usefulness of CSF biochemical markers for detecting primary and metastatic CNS neoplasms, with emphasis on the potential of these markers for the early ident...

Cytology of cerebrospinal fluid: technical and diagnosis considerations.

The usefulness of cerebrospinal fluid cytology in the diagnosis of malignancy has been enhanced in recent years by the development of new techniques for increasing cellular yield. Micropore filters and a specially adapted cytocentrifuge have been used for this purpose with a resulting increase in cell concentration and in diagnostic accuracy. Cerbrospinal fluid examination has been found to be ...

DETECTION OF CRYPTOCOCCUS NEOFORMANS BY SEMINESTED PCR IN CEREBROSPINAL FLUID

ABSTRACT Life-threatening infections caused by the encapsulated fungal pathogen Cryptococcus neoformans have been increasing steadily over the past 10 years. Cryptococcus neoformans is recognized as the most frequent fungal infection of the central nervous system (CNS) in immunocompetent as well as immunocompromised patients. We report the development of a semi-nested- PCR-based assay for the ...

تومورنورواکتودرمال اولیه اینترااسپاینال(گزارش 1 مورد نادر)

Primitive Neuroectodermal Tumors(PNETs) are common tumors in children and are mainly intracranial in location. They frequently disseminate throughout the central nervous system via CSF(cerebrospinal fluid) and may rarely have metastasis outside the neuraxis. Rare cases of primary intraspinal PNETs have been reported so far and most of which are located intradurally in cauda equina. ...

SARS‐CoV2 Neuroinvasion Potential; Narrative Review

The outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS ‐ CoV-2) in December 2019 has led to the epidemic of Covid-19. Recent clinical studies have shown that parts of the nervous system; Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) are involved in SARS-CoV-2 infection, which is associated with a variety of neurological manifestations such as headache, dizziness, and olfactory and gustatory disorders. This study ...
